Durango has a passport counter, and it is the same building where you buy stamps. First-time applications are taken at the Post Office on West 8th Street, by appointment, and the paperwork is the same everywhere in the country. What changes from town to town is how far ahead you have to book and which office will see you.

Where can you apply for a passport in Durango?

The Durango Post Office, 222 W. 8th Street, lists a separate set of passport appointment hours on its USPS location page: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. USPS also lists passport photos at that location. For the full address, parking and mail services, see our answer on the Durango post office.

The State Department keeps the official list of places that accept applications, called the Passport Acceptance Facility Locator. It describes the list as post offices, courts, libraries and other local government offices, searchable by ZIP code. Type in 81301 and call whatever it shows before you go, because many acceptance offices see people by appointment only.

Do you need an appointment?

For the Post Office, yes, plan on one. USPS says first-time passport and photo services are booked through its online scheduler, a lobby kiosk or the retail counter, and that a few locations also keep limited walk-in hours. The Durango page shows its passport hours as appointment hours, which tells you where to aim. Book first, then gather your papers.

What does a passport cost?

Two separate payments are required. The State Department says the application fee is paid to the Department of State and an acceptance fee is paid directly to the facility. This is the schedule in its October 2026 fee chart:

Applying forApplication feeAcceptance fee
First-time passport book, age 16 or older$130$35
First-time passport card, age 16 or older$30$35
First-time book and card together$160$35
Child's passport book, under 16$100$35
Child's passport card, under 16$15$35
Renewal of a passport book by mail$130None

Optional extras go to the State Department as well. Expedited service adds $60, one-to-three-day delivery of the finished book adds $26.87, and a file search, needed when you cannot show proof of citizenship, costs $150. The chart warns that paying the wrong amount can delay your application. A passport card is not valid for international air travel, only for land and sea crossings to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

What do you need to bring?

Federal guidance on applying for a first passport lists four things: Form DS-11, personal documents, a passport photo and the fee. The personal documents are original proof of citizenship, an acceptable photo ID, and a photocopy of the citizenship document plus both sides of the ID. One rule trips people up. Do not sign the form until the acceptance official tells you to, and fill it in ahead of time online or by hand.

Kids add a layer. For anyone under 16, USPS lists these requirements:

  • Both parents or guardians must authorize the passport, and the simplest route is for both to show up with the child
  • The child needs evidence of citizenship, and the parents need proof of the parental relationship
  • A child's passport is valid for only 5 years and cannot be renewed, so you start over from scratch each time one expires
  • When you book the slot, pick "New Passport Only" or "New Passport with Photo Services"

Can you renew a passport in Durango?

Not at the counter. USPS says renewals are done by mail or online if you are eligible. The State Department's renewal page gives the test: your last passport must be undamaged, never reported lost or stolen, issued when you were 16 or older, issued within the last 15 years, and in your current name or backed by a document that shows the change. If you fail any of those, you apply again in person and pay the first-time fees.

How long does it take?

The State Department's processing-time page, checked Oct. 22, 2026, said routine service takes 4 to 6 weeks and expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks, with urgent international travel handled through a passport agency inside 14 days of departure. Those figures move, so look at the page again when you book. Mailing time is extra, and passport photos and fees must be right the first time or the clock restarts.
