About Durango Colorado Directory & How We Rank

Last Updated: October 2026

What this site is

Durango Colorado Directory is a locally focused business directory and resident guide for Durango and La Plata County, Colorado. It lists local businesses with their address, phone, website and Google rating, and it publishes guides and short local answers on everyday questions such as utilities, permits, schools and seasons. It is a project of Animas Marketing.

Where listing data comes from

Listings are built from public business information: the business name, address, phone number, website and social links, and the details on its Google Business Profile, including category, star rating and review count. Ratings and review counts are Google's. We do not write reviews or change ratings. Profile descriptions are composed from the same public facts.

The directory is re-synced on the first of every month. Each refresh updates the facts above, fills in missing descriptions for newly eligible listings, and checks that business websites still respond. Information a business owner has added or changed on a claimed profile is kept across refreshes.

Which listings appear in search results

Every business keeps a profile page on this site, but we only ask search engines to list the profiles that carry real information. A profile is offered to search engines when at least one of these is true:

  • The owner has claimed or verified it, it has a paid upgrade, or our team added it by hand.
  • It is recommended in one of our guides or local answers, or ranked in a Best of Durango list.
  • It is a complete profile: a working website, a phone number and an address, a Google rating of at least 4.0 from at least 150 reviews, and a written description.

Businesses outside the Durango area, such as Pagosa Springs or Telluride, stay on the site but are left out of Durango category lists, rankings and counts, and are only offered to search engines when the owner has claimed the profile or one of our guides links to it. All other profiles stay on the site and in site search, but are marked so search engines do not list them. A category page is also kept out of search results until it has at least 3 qualifying Durango-area businesses, whether or not it has a written introduction.

How Best of Durango rankings work

The Best of Durango lists are calculated from directory data, not ordered by hand. Each business's Google rating is blended with how many reviews stand behind it, using a weighted average:

score = (v / (v + 12)) × R + (12 / (v + 12)) × C

Here R is the business's Google star rating, v is its number of reviews, and C is the average rating of every business competing in that list. A business needs roughly a dozen reviews before its own rating outweighs the group average, so a perfect score from three visits does not outrank a long, consistent record. Ties go to the business with more reviews, then the higher raw rating.

Only open, rated businesses in the Durango area (La Plata County towns such as Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio) with a minimum number of Google reviews are ranked. Each list sets its own minimum, between 3 and 25 reviews depending on the category. Permanently closed businesses are excluded. Featured or paid listings never change Best-of rank order. A star rating is one signal, not a verdict on quality or safety, so check recent reviews and call ahead.

Claimed and featured listings

Any owner can claim a listing for free. Ownership is verified with a code sent to the business email address, with a Google Business Profile sign-in, or, where available, with a text code to the phone number on file. A verified owner can update the profile description, social links and photos, and receives a free local-search visibility report.

Featured is a paid upgrade for claimed businesses. A Featured listing gets priority placement within its category page, a "Featured" badge and a followed link to its website. Paid status does not alter a business's Google rating or review count, and it does not affect Best of Durango rankings.

How guides and local answers are written

Guides and local answers are researched from primary sources and edited before they are published. Each local answer states its question and answers it first, then lists its sources with the date each was last checked. We prefer official sources: the City of Durango, La Plata County, the State of Colorado, and the utilities and school district involved. Where a figure cannot be verified, we leave it out.

Every guide and answer shows a "Last updated" date, and that date changes only when the content has actually been revisited. Seasonal guides, such as winter living and summer events, are reviewed on a schedule ahead of their season. For anything involving health, law or money, treat our pages as a starting point and confirm with the office or professional named.

Closed businesses

When Google reports a business as permanently closed, or we confirm a closure ourselves, its page is marked "Permanently closed" and the business is removed from category listings, search results, recommendations and Best of Durango rankings. Businesses Google lists as temporarily closed get a notice asking visitors to call ahead.

Corrections and contact

To report a wrong address, phone number, closure or anything else, email hello@durangocolorado.org. Business owners can also fix their own details by claiming the listing. We review each correction request.
