Ask five Durango locals where "the DMV" is and you will get two different answers. Both are right. Colorado splits the job: counties handle your vehicle, and the state handles your driver license. Show up at the wrong one and you burn a morning.
Which Durango office do I need?
Start with what you are holding. A car title or a set of expired plates? That is a county errand. A license, a permit or an ID card? That is the state's.
| You need | Go to |
|---|---|
| Registration, plates, tabs, titles, temporary tags | La Plata County Motor Vehicle, 679 Turner Dr., Suite C |
| Driver license, permit, state ID, written test | State Driver License Office, 329-A S. Camino Del Rio |
The state's own appointment page draws the same line. Counties do title and registration, plates and tabs, and disability placards. State offices do licenses, permits and ID cards. Only 14 Colorado counties also run driver license services, and La Plata is not one of them.
Where do I register a vehicle or get plates in Durango?
The County Clerk and Recorder runs motor vehicle service from 679 Turner Drive, Suite C. The county's page lists these hours:
- Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Friday, Saturday and Sunday: closed
Yes, Friday. Plan around it. The phone is (970) 382-7075.
You do not need an appointment, but you can book one online if you hate lines. A 24-hour drop box at the same address takes renewals when the doors are locked. Some third-party sites show a different street for this office, so go by the county's own page.
Bring proof of Colorado insurance. The county says it must see a current Colorado insurance card on every registration, online or in person. Moving a used vehicle in from another state? It needs a VIN inspection first, and the county does a standard one for $20 at both of its branches.

Where do I get a driver license or ID card in Durango?
The state runs its own Driver License Office at 329-A S. Camino Del Rio, Durango, CO 81303. The state's office list gives these details:
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m.
- Phone: 303-205-5600, a Denver-area number
- Services: renew or issue a license, permit or ID card, written tests, motor vehicle records and reinstatement
The catch is the appointment. The state says one is required to visit a state driver license office, and you book it on the state's site, not the county's. The county cannot do it for you.

Is there a DMV office in Bayfield?
For vehicles, yes. If you live out toward Bayfield, the county's second counter can save you the drive into town. The details:
- Where: inside Bayfield Town Hall, 1199 Bayfield Parkway
- When: Tuesday and Thursday only, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Phone: (970) 382-7078
- Mail: none accepted there, so post goes to the Turner Drive address in Durango
Can I renew my plates without going in?
Usually, yes. The county says renewals work by walk-in, mail, kiosk or online. It runs two kiosks, one at North City Market, 3130 Main Avenue in Durango, and one at Bayfield Town Hall. The City Market kiosk skips the counter completely.
Online renewal needs current insurance and carries a fee. The county lists a portal fee of 2.70% of the total on a credit card, or $1.00 per transaction on an e-check.
Buying a car adds tax at the counter. The Durango sales tax rate answer shows how the city, county and state pieces stack up.
