City Hall is on East Second Avenue, and it is where Durango's council meets and where sales tax gets paid. La Plata County runs its own offices on the same street, and visitors mix the two up. They are separate governments with separate counters, which is the first thing to sort out before you drive over.
Where is Durango City Hall?
The address is 949 E. Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301. The main phone number is 970-375-5000. Council Chambers inside the building carry the name Smith Council Chambers, according to the city's facility listing. The building is ADA accessible.
You will also hear about a new City Hall. The city told residents in October that its council received a design presentation for a new integrated City Hall and Police Department campus as the project moves into construction. Nothing on the city's pages says City Hall has moved yet, so the East Second Avenue address stands. Check the city's site before you go if you read this months from now.
What are Durango City Hall's hours?
The city's hours of operation page lists these counters:
| Counter | Monday to Thursday | Friday |
|---|---|---|
| City Hall | 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. |
| Cashier window | 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m. | 8 a.m.-3 p.m. |
| Community Development and Engineering | 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | 7:30 a.m.-noon |
| Police Department lobby | Mon 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Tue-Thu 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. | 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. |
The city's separate facility listing shows shorter City Hall hours of 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The two pages disagree, so call 970-375-5000 before a long drive, especially on a Friday.
When does the Durango City Council meet?
The city's public meetings page says regular council meetings start at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of every month, in person at City Hall. Study sessions are held at 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday. The meetings calendar has the updated dates.
You do not have to attend in person:
- Watch live on the city's YouTube page, or through Hyland Online (OnBase), where public comment is not available
- Join by Microsoft Teams from the link on the meetings calendar, which the city offers for all council meetings and most board and commission meetings
- Call in by phone using the number and meeting code on the calendar
How do I speak at a council meeting?
Here is how public comment works, per the city:
- The sign-up form typically opens one hour before the meeting, and in-person speakers must sign up before the comment section of the agenda is called
- Not every meeting has public comment, and study sessions have none
- Written comments go to publiccomment@durangoco.gov, and the city gives them to council before noon on meeting day
- Comments sent after noon are not guaranteed to reach council before the meeting starts
What can I do at City Hall?
The city points people here for several errands:
- Pay sales tax: mail it or drop it at the customer service counter, addressed to City of Durango Sales Tax, 949 E. 2nd Avenue, per the city's sales tax page
- Business licenses: the city says to see the City Clerk's Office
- Food Tax Rebate and Utility Refund forms: printed copies are available at City Hall, the Transit Center and the Senior Center
- Library, parks and police: the city lists them as separate departments with their own locations
Is City Hall the same as the County courthouse?
No. La Plata County runs its own buildings on the same street, and our sales tax answer shows how the two governments split what you pay. The state's courthouse page puts the La Plata County Courthouse at 1060 East Second Ave., Suite 106, and the city's election page lists the County Administration Building at 1101 East Second Ave. Motor vehicle, property tax and recording counters are on Turner Drive instead.
