What ZIP codes does Durango have?
Three. Two carry street mail and one holds only PO boxes. The site ZIP-Codes.com, which compiles Postal Service and Census data, lists them like this:
| ZIP | Residents in 2020 | |
|---|---|---|
| 81301 | Street delivery | 30,760 |
| 81302 | PO boxes | 0 |
| 81303 | Street delivery | 8,027 |
Start with the oddball. Number 81302 exists for boxes alone, so it has no street addresses and, by Census count, nobody living inside it. Nobody lives in a mailbox. If you rent one, that is the code on your return address, while a friend who looks up your street will get 81301 or 81303.
Now notice the heft of 81301. It sweeps in far more than the city. The college, Main Avenue and the whole downtown grid sit within it, but so do Hermosa, the Purgatory area and a long stretch of La Plata County to the north, which is why a ZIP-based headcount runs about twice the city's own. Our population answer untangles the two.
Which Durango streets fall in 81301 and which in 81303?
The dividing line is odd. It cuts straight through a busy road. On October 22, 2026, we ran a set of Durango addresses through the Census Bureau's address geocoder, a federal tool that returns the code attached to each street segment on file.
| Address | ZIP |
|---|---|
| 949 East 2nd Avenue (City Hall) | 81301 |
| 479 Main Avenue (depot) | 81301 |
| 1000 Rim Drive (campus) | 81301 |
| 1 Skier Place (ski area) | 81301 |
| 1100 South Camino del Rio | 81303 |
| 200 Girard Street | 81303 |
See the switch? Along that stretch of highway frontage, the 1050 block belongs to 81301 and the 1100 block, a few hundred feet on, flips to 81303. Girard is 81303 as well. The Four Corners Film Office, listed at 295 A Girard Street, uses that number on the tourism office's fact sheet.
So your neighbor across the road could have a different one than you. Odd, but legal.
This table is a sample, not the whole map. Before you print 500 envelopes or fill out an insurance form, confirm your address with the official lookup tool, which takes a street address and returns the right code.
Has the split changed over time?
A little. The 2010 count was 28,308 people in the 81301 area and 7,743 in 81303, according to the same site's tables. By 2020 those figures had become 30,760 and 8,027, growth of about 9 percent in the larger area and about 4 percent in the smaller one. Most newcomers landed in the bigger, northern territory.
Does a ZIP code tell me if I'm inside city limits?
No. A ZIP code is a postal route, not a boundary. An address with a Durango ZIP can sit well outside town, and that difference decides who hauls your trash, who bills your water and which well or septic rules apply. Our utilities guide walks through why the city line matters. Ask the seller, the landlord or the city before you assume.
Where is the Durango post office, and when is it open?
The main office sits at 222 West 8th Street, ZIP 81301. Its Postal Service page gives retail hours of 9 to 4 Monday through Friday and 9 to noon Saturdays. Sunday is closed. Passport appointments follow suit. Last collection is at 5 on weekdays.
The page lists street parking at the location. Hours change, so check before a deadline run.
Do the towns near Durango share its codes?
No. Bayfield has its own, 81122, and Hesperus uses 81326, per that same page. Rural addresses between those towns can be tricky. The ZIP-Codes.com page for 81301 labels College Heights, Hermosa, Purgatory and Tamarron as "names to avoid," which means your envelope should simply say Durango.
