Is Durango, Colorado a good place to live?

5 min read Last updated: October 22, 2026

Short answer

Whether Durango, Colorado is a good place to live depends on trade-offs, and the data cuts both ways. Census figures show 58.6 percent of workers commute under 15 minutes, and 14 percent walk or bike to work. But the median home value is $668,400 against $539,400 statewide, median household income is $78,602, and winters bring about 64 inches of snow.

Key facts

Workers with a commute under 15 minutes 58.6% (Colorado: 26.5%) [1]

What does the data say is good about living in Durango?

Short commutes, for one. The Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey says 58.6 percent of Durango workers get to their jobs in under 15 minutes. Statewide, that share is 26.5 percent. Another 17.5 percent of Durango workers need 15 to 24 minutes, so three out of four are done in less than 25 (U.S. Census Bureau). Here is how people get there:

How workers commuteDurangoColorado
Drive alone63.5%65.1%
Walk8.9%2.5%
Bike5.4%0.9%
Work from home15.0%21.0%

Notice the walk and bike rows. Together they get roughly one worker in seven to the job, which fits a compact town with a paved trail running beside the Animas, as Downtown Durango describes it. Try finding that ratio in most of Colorado.

Brainpower shows up too. About 60 percent of residents 25 and older hold a bachelor's degree or better, versus roughly 46 percent across Colorado, and the median age of 38.3 sits just above the state's 37.7.

Outdoor access is the usual headline. Purgatory Resort sits 25 miles north of downtown (Purgatory), and Mesa Verde National Park's entrance is about 35 miles west (National Park Service). Our parks and trails guide covers closer options.

What is the weather like?

Four real seasons. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for the Durango station put January's average high at 39 degrees and its average low at 13. July's high averages 85, with nights near 53. The station receives about 19.6 inches of moisture in a year and 63.7 inches of snow (NOAA). Our snowfall answer shows the monthly pattern and the wide swings between winters.

What are the downsides?

Cost, mainly. Median home value in Durango is $668,400, compared with $539,400 for Colorado, while the median household earns $78,602 against $95,470 statewide, per the 2020-2024 survey. Renting looks gentler: the median gross rent is $1,636 here and $1,761 statewide. But renter households in town earn a median of $49,839, well under the state's $63,537. Our income answer breaks down the gap, and the cost of living guide goes deeper.

Distance is the second cost. Denver is 342 road miles, about 6.5 hours, per the Durango Area Tourism Office. The nearest city larger than Durango is Farmington, New Mexico, as we show in our closest big city answer. The local airport offers nonstop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver and Phoenix (airport).

Water is a planning issue, not a safety one. The city's 2026 water report lists every capped contaminant below its limit, but a news report on a city-commissioned study says Durango stores under 10 days of supply (Water Education Colorado). We cover the details in our tap water answer.

How is the job market?

Steady, with a seasonal wobble. La Plata County's unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in August 2026 on a preliminary basis, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Colorado's seasonally adjusted rate that month was 4.0 percent and the nation's was 4.1. The county series is not seasonally adjusted, so it moves with the calendar: it fell to 2.9 percent in April 2026 and ran 4.1 to 4.2 percent in January and February. Our job search answer has more.

What should you ask yourself before moving?

Three questions cover most of it. Can you handle a median home value of $668,400 on local pay, or will remote work help? Does a 342-mile trip to the state's largest city bother you? And are you ready for roughly 64 inches of snow? If those answers are yes, the data suggests Durango rewards the trade. If they are no, it may not.
