Gyms and Fitness in Durango: Rec Center, Yoga, Pilates

6 min read Last updated: October 16, 2026

A good first stop for fitness in Durango is the city's Community Recreation Center. It has two pools, an indoor track, a climbing wall and a full weight floor under one roof. Private options fill in the rest: class-based gyms, a full-service club, hot yoga, Pilates studios and martial arts schools. Pick by how you like to work out, then try a first class before you join.

Everything below comes from the city and from each business's own website, checked in October 2026. Prices change. Call or click through before you commit.

What does the Durango Community Recreation Center offer?

A lot, for one building. The city's rec center page lists lap and leisure pools, a hot tub, a water slide, an outdoor splash pad, racquetball courts, an indoor track, an aerobics studio, a gymnasium and a climbing wall. It also has free weights, pin-loaded machines and cardio equipment, plus a youth games area.

The fitness page adds three details worth knowing:

  • Water aerobics and land classes both run through the rec center.
  • The studio has a suspension wood floor and a ventilation system that refreshes the air every 12 minutes.
  • Certified personal trainers are available through the front desk.

Passes come in 3-month, 6-month and annual versions, per the city. A second person in the same household pays half price, with a limit of two people per household. Daily passes get no family discount. Check the city's page for current prices, since we could not confirm them.

What should I know about the pool?

Plenty, because it is the part of the building people use most. The city's aquatics page lists these basics:

DetailWhat the city says
Weekday hours5:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
SaturdayOpen family swim, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
SundayOpen family swim, 12 to 4:30 p.m.
Water temperatureLap pool 79 degrees, leisure pool 89 degrees, hot tub 102 degrees
Lap math35 laps, or 70 lengths, make a mile

The pool shuts for an annual maintenance week. This year the city listed October 10 to 18, so call ahead each fall.

Classes go well beyond lap swimming. The city lists water aerobics, a warm-water yoga class called YOQUA, aquatic physical therapy for people with spine and orthopedic problems, and even kayak roll sessions in the lap pool. Swim lessons skip December, March, April and May. Registration opens at 8 a.m. on the first Friday of the month before classes begin, though January's date moves to the second Friday.

Serious about laps? The Durango Swim Club, a competitive team for kids ages 5 to 18, has trained in the 11-lane lap pool since February 2002, per the city. Masters Swimming runs six workouts a week for swimmers 18 and over.

The city also runs Durango Gymnastics, and it offers programs in soccer, volleyball, BMX, lacrosse, martial arts and mountain biking. Register through the city's programs page. For skating and skiing, see Chapman Hill in our parks and trails guide. The Animas River Trail also reaches the rec center on Main Avenue.

Which private gyms are worth a look?

Think in categories, because the gyms here differ more in style than in equipment.

Ratings below are the Google ratings shown in each listing in October 2026. They are not our vetting.

Durango Fitness Club. Its site lists 8 workout rooms, a sauna and cold plunge, unlimited classes included with membership (cycling, aerobics, yoga and Pilates), and a seasonal outdoor pool. Weekday hours run 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. The listing shows a 3.8 rating across 140 reviews.

Fit 247 Gym. It says it has been family-owned and non-franchised since 2002, and that members must be 18 or older. It offers a complimentary training session. The listing shows 4.9 across 292 reviews.

Catacombs Fitness. The site describes coached classes and private training, and it says there is no long-term contract. New members start with what it calls a "No Sweat Intro." It has operated for more than 10 years, per its site. The listing shows 5.0 across 144 reviews.

The Vault. Classes mix strength, intervals and mobility with no prescribed weights, and the site advertises a 7-days-for-$7 trial. It started in 2012 and offers beginner classes without barbells. It lists the same Florida Road address as Durango Fitness Club.

Where do I take yoga or Pilates?

Durango has a deep yoga bench. Browse the full yoga studio category and the Pilates category.

The Sweaty Buddha runs heated classes daily. Its site offers new students a month of unlimited yoga for $39. And if you bike, carpool or walk to class, you get a free mat and towel rental.

Pilates Durango posts clear prices. As of October 2026, a single equipment class is $35 and a single mat class is $23, with packages that cut the per-class cost. New local clients get a first class for $20 on equipment or $15 on mat. Small classes run six days a week, per the site.

Pause combines Pilates reformers, yoga, strength work and nutrition coaching under one roof. It runs a Smiley studio and a Riverside studio, per its listings.

What about martial arts and climbing?

For martial arts, Durango Martial Arts Academy teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts, according to its site. It says it prepares students who want to compete. The listing shows 5.0 across 69 reviews.

Prefer something softer? The martial arts school category also lists aikido groups, including Durango Shin Budo Kai Aikido.

Climbing is simpler. The rec center has a climbing wall, per the city. For outdoor climbing, ask at a local gear shop.

How do I choose, and what does a trial cost?

Start with the trial offers, since most places here let you test before you sign:

PlaceTrial offer, per its own site
The Vault7 days for $7
The Sweaty BuddhaFirst month of unlimited yoga for $39
Pilates DurangoFirst class $20 on equipment, $15 on mat (local new clients)
Fit 247 GymComplimentary training session
Catacombs FitnessA "No Sweat Intro"

Then ask three questions.

1. What will I actually show up for? A cheap pass you never use costs more than an expensive one you do. Classes with a coach drag people out of bed. A big weight room suits people who already know what to do. 2. What is the real total price? Passes, class packs and memberships work differently. Count the whole month. 3. Is it close? Distance kills habits. Pick the place you can reach in ten minutes.

Need one-on-one help? Browse personal trainers. The rec center also keeps a list of certified trainers.
