If you want one answer, it is this: locals eat breakfast at Durango Diner, Oscar's Cafe or College Cafe. All three serve breakfast and lunch. The Diner posts hours of 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., seven days a week, which makes it the safe bet when you are not sure what day it is.
The rest of this guide sorts the other places by the kind of morning you are having. Fast. Slow. Sunday. Monday, when half the town is closed.
Where do locals eat breakfast in Durango?
Three sit-down rooms do most of the work.
Durango Diner, 957 Main Ave, has been the town's counter-and-booth breakfast for more than 60 years, by its own count. The green chili is the star. It has been sold in local grocery stores for over two decades, so plenty of Durango kitchens already have a jar. On the plate you will find hand-grated hashbrowns, huevos rancheros and a breakfast the menu calls The Cure. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., every day. A summer Saturday means a wait.
Oscar's Cafe, 18 Town Plaza. A 50s-style diner that has been feeding the town since 1980. A G-scale model train circles the dining room, and the walls hold what the cafe calls just about every Snowdown poster ever made. The breakfast menu leans on pancakes, hashbrowns, green chili and chicken fried steak. There is french toast too. The site warns it is the kind your momma warned you about. Omelets stay on the menu during lunch hours, which helps if your party can't agree on a time. Durango's tourism board once asked Facebook users to vote for the best breakfast in town, and Oscar's came in first.
College Cafe, 128 E 9th St. Do not go to the old College Drive address. The cafe moved to 9th Street, and some older listings still show the former spot. Owners Aaron Seitz and Leah Evers bought it in 2011. The menu is long: biscuits and gravy, a Bomb Burrito smothered in your choice of green chili, red chili, sausage gravy, coconut curry or hollandaise, and four versions of eggs benedict. The coffee is organic and roasted in Durango by Desert Sun Coffee Roasters, and the chorizo comes from Sunnyside Meats, also local. The cafe's site sends you to its Google listing for hours, so check there before you drive over.
Which Durango breakfast places are open on Monday?
This is the question that wrecks a visiting-family morning. Durango is a town of small owner-run places, and a lot of them close one or two days a week.
These post a seven-day schedule on their own sites:
- Durango Diner: 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Durango Doughworks, 2653 Main Ave: open every day, 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Bread, 135 E 8th St downtown, and its North Shop bakery at 42 County Road 250 (Bread North): every day, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Backcountry Gourmet, a food truck at 11th Street Station, 1101 Main Ave: breakfast burritos seven days a week.
Cafe Amor Riverside runs the other way. It opens Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and is closed Saturday and Sunday. That makes it a weekday spot only.
Where can you get a quick breakfast burrito or pastry?
Some mornings you need food in a bag and wheels on the road.
Durango Doughworks is the North Main answer. Its own description lists handmade donuts, organic bagels baked each morning, locally roasted coffee and breakfast burritos. It sits up the avenue from downtown, so the lot is easier than a Main Ave meter.
Then there is the truck. Backcountry Gourmet parks at 11th Street Station, a food-truck lot built around an old 1920s filling station at Main and 11th, and it sells breakfast burritos seven days a week. Lunch turns into sliders, including a filet mignon one at $7 on its posted menu.
Bread is the bakery counter. It says it has served handcrafted food and coffee for more than 20 years, and it keeps the same 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. hours at both shops. Bruin Coffee & Biscuits, at 3211 Main Ave, opens at 7 a.m. and builds its menu around biscuit sandwiches. The one it calls The Original is biscuit, egg, bacon and cheddar.
For French pastry, Jean Pierre Bakery & Wine Bar at 601 Main Ave lists croissants, eclairs, quiche, made-to-order omelets, crepes and French toast. It has a patio. Its site did not post hours when we checked, so call before a special trip. More cafe and pastry options are in our bakery and cafe directories and in the coffee shop guide.
Where is the best brunch in Durango?
Real brunch, the kind with cocktails and a reservation, mostly lives on weekends here. The list is short, and two of the three names are dinner restaurants that open early on Saturday or Sunday.
El Moro Spirits & Tavern, 945 Main Ave, serves brunch Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., then switches to dinner at 4 p.m. Its site describes the brunch menu as guest favorites plus seasonal additions, and it takes online reservations. Monday through Friday it is a dinner-only room, so do not show up at 9 on a Tuesday.
Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen, 862 Main Ave, lists brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner every day from 4 p.m. The restaurant says reservations are highly recommended.
Jean Pierre pitches mimosas with fresh-squeezed orange juice for a slow morning on its patio. Cafe Amor Riverside lists breakfast, brunch and lunch with a patio that connects to the Animas River Trail, which helps if the plan includes a walk. It has a salad bar, which no other place here can say.
Where can you get green chile on your eggs?
You can get it nearly everywhere, and that is the point. Southwest Colorado sits close to New Mexico, and green chile on breakfast is the default, not a special order.
The Diner and Oscar's both lead with green chili on their own sites. College Cafe lets you pick: green, red, sausage gravy, coconut curry or hollandaise on the same burrito. For a counter burrito, the Mexican food guide covers the taquerias that open early.
What is parking like on a weekday morning?
Better than you think, with one rule. Per the Downtown Durango Business Improvement District, downtown meters must be paid Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Most cost $1 an hour, or $1.50 in summer. Meters are free after 6 p.m. and all day on weekends.
So an early Diner breakfast before 8 a.m. on a weekday costs nothing, and a Saturday or Sunday brunch downtown costs nothing either. The tradeoff is a crowd. Most meters are three-hour meters, which is plenty for a slow breakfast. If you plan to linger past noon on a Wednesday, use the app the district recommends or feed the meter.
How should you plan a Durango breakfast?
Go early or go late. The 7 to 8 a.m. hour is easy at the Diner, Doughworks and Bread. The 9 to 11 a.m. window fills up in summer and on ski weekends.
Pick the day first. Monday and Tuesday narrow your options to the seven-day list above. Saturday and Sunday open up El Moro and Chimayo.
In the off-season, look up hours the night before. A few of these restaurants point you to their Google listing instead of posting a schedule, and a small owner-run place can shorten its week without telling anyone.
