Durango sits in USDA hardiness zone 6a for most of town, with one wrinkle. The official 2023 USDA map assigns ZIP 81301, which covers downtown, Main Avenue and Fort Lewis College, to zone 6a. ZIP 81303 on the southern edge of town gets zone 6b. Plenty of garden websites will tell you Durango is a flat 5b or 6b, and they are guessing from a single point, so it is worth checking the source that all of them borrow from.
What hardiness zone is Durango, Colorado in?
Zone 6a if your address is in 81301, and 6b if it is in 81303. We pulled both values straight from the ZIP-level file that Oregon State University's PRISM Climate Group released with the 2023 USDA map (PRISM Climate Group); the PO-box ZIP 81302 reads 6b there too. Each half zone spans 5°F of average yearly coldest temperature, and our ZIP code answer shows which streets land on which side of the 81301 and 81303 line, so a neighbor across the road can sit in a different half zone on paper, because the line follows ZIP boundaries and not the weather.
| ZIP | Zone | Average yearly coldest night |
|---|---|---|
| 81301 (most of town) | 6a | -10°F to -5°F |
| 81302 (PO boxes only) | 6b | -5°F to 0°F |
| 81303 (southern edge) | 6b | -5°F to 0°F |
| 81122 (Bayfield) | 6a | -10°F to -5°F |
What changed from the 2012 map to the 2023 map?
One Durango ZIP moved. In the 2012 edition, 81301 and 81303 were both zone 6a. In 2023, 81301 stayed at 6a and 81303 warmed to 6b, while the PO-box ZIP 81302 was already listed as 6b (PRISM Climate Group). USDA says the newer map uses the 30 years from 1991 through 2020 and was chosen to match the period climatologists use for their baseline normals (USDA ARS). A shift of one half zone is a small step, but it can matter for a marginal shrub or fruit tree.
How cold does zone 6a actually get?
Colder than the label sounds if you are a newcomer from a milder climate. The zone is built on the average annual extreme minimum temperature, which is the coldest reading of each year averaged over the 30 years (PRISM Climate Group). It describes a typical worst night, not a worst-case night. Durango-La Plata County Airport recorded minus 8°F on February 21, 2026, in a winter that ran warm overall, according to the monthly NWS reports summarized in our winter temperature answer. Plan for the odd year that undershoots the band.
What does a hardiness zone leave out?
A lot. USDA's own description says the map rests on one thing, the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, shown in 10-degree zones and 5-degree half zones (USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map). It says nothing about:
- Frost dates: the last spring freeze and first fall freeze decide when you can plant, and they are a separate dataset covered in our last frost date answer
- Summer heat and the length of the season, which matter more for tomatoes than any winter low
- Snow cover, wind, soil drainage and the sunny wall that keeps a plant alive one zone past its rating
The grid underneath the map is 800 meters wide (PRISM states 30 arc-seconds for the lower 48), so a single ZIP boils a lot of terrain down to one letter. Durango's range from the river bottom to the benches on the mesas is large enough that a yard on a north-facing slope and a yard in the Animas Valley can deserve different advice.
How do I check my own address?
Type your ZIP code into the Quick Zip Code Search on the USDA map. That returns the same half zone as the table above. For a finer read, PRISM publishes the underlying temperature grid for download. Local garden centers and landscapers are the places to ask about plants for your part of town. For the yearly chore calendar, see the seasonal home maintenance guide.
